While Sara Cina's name might not yet be known nationally, her reputation as artistic mover and shaker in her Arizona home base is unsurpassed. Her nearly two decade run as a talent booker at legendary Tempe watering hole and rock club, Long Wong's, endeared her to several generations of Arizona musicians. But Cina's much-loved visual designs for Wong's and numerous local bands have been an equally important element in defining the city's music scene.

While Cina's been creating art since childhood, and has often sold her paintings to private collectors, she's now making her work available to the masses, bringing her warm, charming visual sensibility to a line of clothing for children and adults called Saracina Designs.

Cina doesn't consider herself a fashionista, but rather a folk artist who's making her inimitable designs available to families looking for a hip, casual, yet elegant alternative to the hoary brand names and garish logos of mass-produced clothing lines.

During her years at Long Wong's, Cina created designs and artwork for a number of bands and for the club itself. Her hand-drawn work on the venue's famed music calendars and on a line of popular Wong's clothing made her art an integral part of club's identity. Over the years, Cina was approached on numerous occasions with the idea of expanding her designs into a full time business. But she always demurred, content to run the day to day operations of the club. Finally, after Long Wong's was sacrificed to the wrecking ball in 2004, Cina decided to set out and form her own clothing company -- thus the birth of the new Saracina Designs.

Launching with an initial line of 11 original designs, Cina's work relies on her homemade visual aesthetic – a mix of evocative hand-drawn doodles and clever wordplay – and a deceptively refined sense of color and space. The company will launch with baby onesies, children's and women's t-shirts. With many more designs in the works, Cina also plans to expand the line into a broader variety of clothing as well as designing graphics for greeting cards, children's books and even hopes to see her designs on skateboards and surfboards.

A wholly local Arizona based operation – Saracina Designs' manufacturing, silk-screening and website operations are all handled by Phoenix area businesses -- Cina sees a bright future for the company, which she hopes to grow organically, creating and maintaining a quality, hand-crafted line for people to buy, wear and enjoy.
